Wallpaper isn’t what it used to be- in the best way possible! Gone are the days of sad patterns peeling off the wall. If you have a good installer and quality paper, it will last for years. Plus, someday when its time, it’s more easily removed than you think! Wallpaper is one of our favorite ways to bring color and pattern into a space, instantly giving a room a facelift. Our design businesses are known for bold applications, but we love a subtle element as well. Either way you go, wallpaper is just another layer of design to complete the space. There truly is something for everyone whether you bring in a natural element, like grass cloth, or go full maximalist pattern.
Without significant architectural elements, utilizing a statement wallpaper can bring energy and details to a space that will drive the color palette. If you aren’t sure where to start with your room, find a wallpaper that you find inspiring and pull from there. You don’t have to use it in the whole room either; it could be the back of a bookcase or just the ceiling. We typically stay away from singular accent walls because they appear a bit unintentional and end abruptly. Instead, try framing out the wall with molding and wallpaper inside of it for added visual interest. Another great option is to paper just above your tile or wainscoting, like Studio Plumb did here in her daughter’s bathroom with the Garden State wallpaper by Milton and King.
Wallpaper can have an especially big impact in small spaces. So much so that you don’t have to do much else to create a fully designed room. Smaller rooms are the best places to try out a bold style. There is so much less commitment in wallpapering a half bath then if you were enveloping your bedroom in loud print. Although we are definitely fans of the latter, we know it isn’t for everyone. Polish off the lighting, make sure your paint ties in, and you are good to go. Thinking of a small powder bath, like this one below, choosing a bold paper creates a complete and immersive experience. So what else do you need to know? There are 2 big caveats to consider before investing in wallpaper. If you have highly textured walls, you’re going to see every bump in your beautiful pattern. Installers prefer a Level 5 smooth drywall finish which can be achieved with retexturing if necessary. We promise, it’s worth it! Secondly, when using wallpaper in bathrooms, always check the manufacturer recommendations and if there’s a shower, be sure there is plenty of ventilation. Most often, you shouldn’t use it in spaces that get overly steamy. Make sure you have a great installer (we know some of the best!) and get a quality paper. That’s all for now! What space are you ready dress up?
